The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI),the first indigenous Catholic Congregation of India, is the pioneer in the field of education in Kerala. Saint Chavara Kuriakose Elias is the Founder of the CMI Congregation and he established the first Catholic School of Kerala at Mannanam in 1846. In the year 1864, Saint Chavara Kuriakose Elias, the Vicar General of the Syro-Malabar Church, ordered all the parishes to start schools adjacent to the church. This historic order triggered the emergence of a galaxy of educational institutions all over the State. It also became the basis of the socio-economic development of the whole State.
The main aim of the Congregation is to bring about a social transformation with emphasis on an option for the poor, coupled with a target of a moral reconstruction of society. Today, the CMIs run about 500 educational institutions which include Schools, Arts and Science Colleges, Autonomous Colleges, M. Ed and B. Ed Colleges , Engineering Colleges, Polytechnic Colleges, ITC Centres, Nursing Schools, Research Centres and a Medical College.
OUR INSPIRATION -
Saint Chavara Kuriakose Elias (1805-1871)
Saint Chavara Kuriakose Elias, the founder of the religious congregation Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) is our role model and his vision is made manifest in our institution. He has left his indelible marks in the spheres of education, social reform, media, culture and religious formation. India’s first indigenous religious congregation for men, CMI was his brainchild. In 1831, along with the support of Fr. Thomas Palackal and Fr. Thomas Porukara, the CMI was established which sparked off a spiritual renovation in the Church. Saint Chavara Kuriakose Elias established the first Catholic Sanskrit School in 1846, seminaries for education and formation of the clergy, a publishing house, a home for the dying and the destitute as well as schools for general education. His claim to 'Education for All' lead to the provision of education for girls as well as for people from all walks of life. He was a great educationist and a builder of institution. As a champion of social reform and a man who stood for integration, he has bequeathed us a legacy which we at Carmel College,Muhamma proudly uphold.
In K.E. Group of Institutions, along with imparting knowledge, the students are encouraged to emulate the principles of austerity, discipline and truthfulness which have been practiced by St. Chavara Kuriakose Elias, the inspiration behind the setting up of all the CMI Institutions.
